Bethlehem Car Works Sparrows Point Division SP-109 HO Scale Great Northern GN Heater Car Kit

During the steam era passenger cars were heated with steam from the locomotive boiler. When the nearly 8 mile long cascade tunnel was completed in the late 1920's traffic was going expected to be pulled by electric locomotives. The GN's new Y-1 and Z-1 class lacked steam generators and the special heater cars were constructed. They even car in the summer to provide hot water for the lavatories and dining cars.

This kit is based on Great Northern Heater car #6 and #7 which had  a single baggage on one side and a patched in grill window and small window on the opposite side. The #6 was converted from GN RPO #200 and the #7 from the RPO #201 both in 1943. The #6 was sold to the Western Pacific November 11th 1968. Car #7 was sold to the Spokane Portland & Seattle in 1969 for use as a stationary steam plant after a fire destroyed the original steam plant in Vancouver, Washington.

Kit Includes:

  • 3D printed body
  • 3D printed truck parts
  • Decals
  • Wire Grab Irons
  • Eye Loops
  • Diaphragms
  • Other Detail Parts

The cars were originally painted Pullman green but repainted in the orange and green scheme wit deluxe striping around 1951. Sometime after 1964 they were repainted into the simplified orange and green scheme.
