Compared to the mighty engines the lowly caboose is little glorified and even less photographed. John Hall counters this trend in his account of the Reading Company caboose also know as the "Northeastern" or Standard caboose. So well designed and functional that it became standard for many other lines, this last car in the train provided shelter for shifting and shunting crews and lookout spots for equipment damage. Hall's book finally gives the caboose its due respect.
